Press Release No 10 – June 2010: University Student Prizes – Bitumen Emulsion Paper

The Road Emulsion Association is offering cash prizes in 2010/11 to university final-year undergraduate or post graduate students who are to provide a short paper designed to develop better technical understanding of bitumen emulsions and to raise awareness of the work of the bitumen emulsion supplier in the UK.

The Association sponsors the awards and will welcome interest from any student in a UK civil or pavement engineering, or construction based university department.

Some suggested topics might include “Sustainable road surface treatments using bitumen emulsions”; “How bitumen emulsions reduce the CO2 footprint of highway construction” and “The place of bitumen emulsions in road maintenance”

Interested students should:-

  1. initially contact the Association’s Secretary & Consultant to express an interest (Office 01903 746584; Mobile 07836 385543; e-mail john@rea.org.uk)
  2. provide details of their present course of study; the stage of the studies and their university head of department’s name and title.
  3. provide an outline the proposed title of the paper.

 

Following the initial stages the student needs to:-

(i)   submit a paper of between 2,000 and 3,000 words to the Association’s Secretary & Consultant by 31 December 2010

A special committee of members of the Association will judge all submissions and provided that a reasonable number of papers are received, the Association plans to award prizes for 1st place – £700 and 2nd place – £300.

New Member of the Road Emulsion Association Limited

The Road Emulsion Association Limited is pleased to announce the addition of a new member company to the association. The new member company is PolyBitumens which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Eurovia UK. PolyBitumens commissioned emulsion production at their new manufacturing facilities early in 2019. The production of emulsion materials at PolyBitumens in Thurrock, Essex, will be used on various road improvement schemes in southern England, the Home Counties and in Greater London.

As a member of the Road Emulsion Association, Polybitumens will contribute to all the future activities of the Road Emulsion Association with Paul Goosey, (Managing Director), being appointed as a Director of the REA and the company member representative on the REA Council. Jonathan Core, (Technical Director), will become a member of the REA Technical Committee and Paul Kimber, (Divisional Manager), will be the representative on the REA HSE Forum Group.

With PolyBitumens as a new emulsion producer in the UK, and now a member of the association, the Road Emulsion Association continues to represent the interests and activities of this important industry sector and will maintain its position as the key trade association promoting the benefits of bitumen emulsion products in the UK.

Are Your Roads Bonded?

Following the successful REAL Bond Coat Video launched in 2017 an additional supporting note has been published identifying the performance benefits of using Bond Coats to bind the road layers together. A winter of high rainfall and cold temperatures has resulted in further deterioration to our roads and more pot holes having to be filled. The correct use of bond coat will help reduce this problem and extend the structural life of the road. See the “Publications” page.
