Press Release No 15 – February 2015: COHESION CLASSES IN BRITISH STANDARD BS EN 13808:2013

Following the introduction of the most recent version of BS EN 13808, the Road Emulsion Association wishes to draw attention to the sequence of cohesion classes in the revised standard.

The sequence of cohesion classes in EN 13808:2013 has decreasing values of cohesion with increasing class numbers. This is the other way round to the previous Standard EN13808:2005 which shows increasing values of cohesion with increasing class numbers.

Following the standard’s publication a request was made to the working group responsible for EN13808, TC336 WG2, that a Corrigendum be issued for EN13808:2013 to amend this to avoid confusion over existing CE Certificates, Type Approval Installation Trials (TAITs) and inconsistencies with reference to the Manual of Contract Documents for Highway Works (MCDHW).  TC336 WG2 declined this request on the grounds that other national bodies were happy with the current situation and it would cause them difficulty with their national documentation if the standard was amended following publication of EN 13808:2013.

REA discussed possible implications of this on members and agreed to draw attention to users through this press release.

Are Your Roads Bonded?

Following the successful REAL Bond Coat Video launched in 2017 an additional supporting note has been published identifying the performance benefits of using Bond Coats to bind the road layers together. A winter of high rainfall and cold temperatures has resulted in further deterioration to our roads and more pot holes having to be filled. The correct use of bond coat will help reduce this problem and extend the structural life of the road. See the “Publications” page.
