Bond Coat Webinar Launched on REA Website

The IAT hosted webinar on the subject of the “Importance of Interlayer Bond Coat Application During Pavement Construction and Maintenance” has now been posted on the REA website. The presentation by Gary Schofield of TotalEnergies is an important element in the joint REAL and RSTA Bond Coat awareness campaign which also included the published Bond Coat article with supporting comments from National Highways and senior pavement engineers in the UK devolved governments. New Chair of the REAL Technical Committee and HSE Committee

20th July 2022

After a period of 12 years of commitment and leadership as Chairman of the Road Emulsion Association Technical Committee, Mike Lancaster (Nynas) has announced that due to a change in role within Nynas UK he is stepping down as the Chair of this important industry committee. The REA Technical Committee (TC) has unanimously voted to appoint Paul Cadel of Colas to lead the TC and this was confirmed by the REA Council at their meeting on the 8th June. Paul has many years of experience in the emulsion production and application industry and the Road Emulsion Association is looking forward to Paul representing the industry in his capacity as Chair of the Technical Committee. 
The REA HSE Committee has also appointed a new Chairperson to lead the Committee. The elected Chair which was also confirmed by the REA Council is Paul Kimber of PolyBitumens.

New REAL Chairperson

The Road Emulsion Association Limited (REAL) is pleased to announce the appointment of Paul Goosey as the new Chairperson of the Association for the next two years following the Ninety-Third Annual General Meeting held on Wednesday 2nd March 2022. Paul has held a number senior positions in his career with Eurovia and is currently Managing Director of their businesses, covering specialist treatments, surfacing, asphalt and materials production, research and development, and asset management solutions. Eurovia joined the REAL as a producer of bitumen emulsions following the significant investment in their new polymer bitumen and bitumen emulsion manufacturing facility ‘PolyBitumens’ located on the North Bank of the river Thames near London. The Vice-Chair will be Sommerville Wright who is an Associate Director of Colas Limited.

REA and RTSA joint campaign to highlighting the importance of Bond Coats

The Road Emulsion Association (REA) and the Road Surface Treatments Association (RSTA) have jointly launched a campaign to highlight the importance of the application of Bond Coats in road construction and maintenance. The joint campaign aims to provide information to all clients, highway contractors, and road users, of the benefits of Bond Coats and involves the publication of a new article titled “The Importance of Interlayer Bonding in Pavement Construction” Read the article here.

The article will shortly be published in a number of key industry journals and the campaign was recently launched with a Webinar hosted by the IAT. There are plans for a second webinar later in the year. The Bond Coat Video has also been relaunched as part of the campaign and is available to be viewed via the REA members websites and the REA website (watch the video here) and the REA Linkedin site.

New Associate Member – REA

21st December 2020

The Road Emulsion Association is pleased to announce that following a recent application from CORE Additive Technologies to join the REA as an Associate Member, the Council of the REA has approved the application , and CORE Additive Technologies have joined the Association with immediate effect. The representative of the new Associate Member will be David Needham and he will be joining the REA Technical Committee at future meetings. The REA welcomes David’s contribution to the important activities of the Technical Committee.

New Appointments – REA Council

28th March 2020

At the Annual General Meeting of the Road Emulsion Association Limited held on the 11th March 2020 Jane Dunne (Nynas), was elected as the Chair of Council for the next two years through to the AGM in 2022. Paul Goosey (PolyBitumens), was elected as the Vice-Chair for the same period. There was a change in the Colas representation on Council with the resignation of Stewart Struthers who has represented Colas on the Council of the REAL for over 30 years. The new Colas representative and appointed as a Director of the Association is Sommerville Wright. Prior to the AGM there was also a change in the representation of Total UK Ltd with the resignation of John Tuite and the appointment of Chris Milligan as the Total UK representative and a Director of the REA Council.

Revision of Technical Data Sheet Number 8

3rd December 2019

The Road Emulsion Association has updated Technical Data Sheet (TDS) No 8.
The TDS is now titled – Patching, Grouting, and Spray Injection Patching.
The update primarily concerns Section 4 of the TDS which is now titled Spray Injection Patching, (previously titled Velocity Patching). This has been updated and includes reference to Spray Injection Patching being a seasonal process as noted in the original guidance in BS434-2 : 2005.

New Surface Dressing Video with Subtitles

The Road Emulsion Association (REA) and the Road Surface Treatments Association (RSTA) have developed a short animated video highlighting the benefits of Surface Dressing as part of a planned highway maintenance program. New Member of the Road Emulsion Association Limited

23rd March 2019

The Road Emulsion Association Limited is pleased to announce the addition of a new member company to the association. The new member company is PolyBitumens which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Eurovia UK. PolyBitumens commissioned emulsion production at their new manufacturing facilities early in 2019. The production of emulsion materials at PolyBitumens in Thurrock, Essex, will be used on various road improvement schemes in southern England, the Home Counties and in Greater London.

As a member of the Road Emulsion Association, Polybitumens will contribute to all the future activities of the Road Emulsion Association with Paul Goosey, (Managing Director), being appointed as a Director of the REA and the company member representative on the REA Council. Jonathan Core, (Technical Director), will become a member of the REA Technical Committee and Paul Kimber, (Divisional Manager), will be the representative on the REA HSE Forum Group.

With PolyBitumens as a new emulsion producer in the UK, and now a member of the association, the Road Emulsion Association continues to represent the interests and activities of this important industry sector and will maintain its position as the key trade association promoting the benefits of bitumen emulsion products in the UK.
